Digistar 3 Laser

A Quantum Leap in Display Technology

Digistar 3 Laser is a revolutionary new full-dome digital theater system that combines the features and power of Digistar 3 with the highest resolution video projection system in the world. Digistar 3 Laser uses the E&S Laser Projector (ESLP®) to display over 16 million pixels of video on the dome-over twice the image resolution of Digistar 3 using six CRT-based video projectors. Plus, the ESLP offers expanded color space: 12 bits per pixel (36-bit color) instead of the standard 8 bits per pixel (24-bit color). Digistar 3 Laser's ability to reproduce color exceeds any other visual display medium, including motion picture film.

Digistar 3 Laser Specifications:
  • Resolution per projector: Single projector system: 5120 x 4096 pixels (H x V)
  • Resolution per projector: Dual projector system: 5120 x 2049 pixels (H x V)
  • Brightness: 2,000 ANSI lumens per projector (6 watts)
  • Contrast Ratio: >2,500:1
  • Visible Pixels on Dome: 16 million (single projector); 14.8 million (dual projectors)

Spectacular Image Quality

Digistar 3 Laser offers the highest digital image quality available anywhere. With the ESLP, the system displays over 16 million pixels of resolution on a dome. Additionally, the Digistar 3 Laser system requires no projector blending in the single projector system and only one blend with the dual projector system.

GLV Technology and Continuous Wave Lasers

Click to enlargeThe Digistar 3 Laser system uses highly efficient solid-state continuous wave lasers. Because of the efficiency of the lasers and a tightly controlled optical path that wastes a minimum of light, the system is able to brilliantly illuminate a dome with only 3 watts to 12 watts of laser light output, depending on dome size.

Click to enlargeThe laser light is optically spread out in a thin line across an imaging device called a Grating Light Valve (GLV). The GLV consists of a vertical line of 8,000 micro ribbons that can bend slightly in response to a small electrical charge. The amount of bend or deflection in each pair of ribbons equals a brightness value for one pixel; therefore, since there are 8,000 ribbons and a pair of ribbons controls the brightness level for each pixel, each GLV has 4,000 completely independent pixels of vertical resolution.

The GLV ribbons respond very quickly to changes in voltage, so the line of visible laser light is progressively scanned horizontally across the dome, creating a complete 4,000 pixel-wide frame of video once every 60th of a second. This progressive-scan laser technology requires a scan mirror that spins at only 3600 RPM.

Laser Safety

The displayed frame of video consists of safe, visible laser light that has been optically diffused and spread over the entire dome. From a safety standpoint, the ESLP is essentially as safe as a standard laser pointer and has been designed to certify as an IEC Class-3R (laser safety rating) device. There is no restriction on the height of the dome because the laser light is safe. Also, the scan mirrors are virtually silent.

Unlike typical pulsed lasers that have to repeatedly peak up to over 10,000 watts of instantaneous power to achieve less than 10 average watts of light, the continuous wave lasers in the ESLP produce the a higher quality light output consistently, with no power "spikes." This smooth, even power output characteristic not only makes the ESLP light inherently much safer, it also dramatically reduces the stress on components in the light path, such as optical transmission fibers.

Solid-State Design

Click to enlargeThe ESLP's light source uses laser diodes and fiber-optic amplifiers from the telecommunications industry, which are known to have an extremely long operational life. Unlike other competitive projector types, the ESLP has no periodic "consumables," such as CRT tubes or arc lamps that need to be frequently replaced. As a result, the Digistar 3 Laser system exhibits exceptional reliability and low life-cycle costs.

The ESLP runs on standard household 20A outlets and consumes less than 1 kW, so it is inexpensive to operate. Digistar 3 Laser is designed to house all the laser sources in one cabinet, eliminating the need for a separate room for additional laser hardware

Single-Laser System (Theater Center)

Click to enlargeThe Digistar 3 Laser - Single-Laser System uses one laser projector with a fisheye lens mounted in the center of the domed theater. Providing over 16 million pixels of resolution and no projector edges to blend, the single-laser system is the perfect solution for 21st Century digital dome theaters.

Dual-Laser System (Theater Cove Mounted)

The Digistar 3 Laser - Dual-Laser System uses two laser projectors with specialized lenses mounted in the cove of the domed theater. Providing over 16 million pixels of resolution and high brightness, the dual-laser system is the perfect solution for digital theaters that have been designed with audience seats, not equipment, in the center of the theater.
